Denver-based SCL Health has appointed Dr. Shawn Dufford chief medical officer.
Dufford, 51, previously served as VP and CMO at St. Joseph Hospital, an SCL hospital in Denver. He started his new role late last month at the eight-hospital system, which operates in Colorado, Montana and Kansas.
Dufford replaces Dr. John Byrnes, who left the system in March 2014 to pursue a consulting career.
Since joining St. Joseph in 2011, Dufford has helped the the hospital transition to a new facility that opened in December. Dufford also offered clinical leadership in the hospital's joint operating agreement with National Jewish Health that was signed last summer. He oversaw 1,450 medical staff and 300 mid-level providers.
Dufford, an anesthesiologist, served in a physician leadership role at Colorado Permanente Medical Group prior to working at St. Joseph. Before that, he spent nine years as a Denver-area firefighter and paramedic and also worked as a flight instructor and corporate pilot.
