A second medical conference in Chicago this week will feature physicians and attorneys exploring the legal issues surrounding healthcare data privacy breaches and telemedicine.
The American Bar Association Health Law Section, the Chicago Medical Society and the American Association for Physician Leadership are co-sponsoring the Physicians Legal Issues Conference, to be held June 10-12.
Dr. Bill Crouse, senior director of worldwide health for Microsoft, will deliver a keynote address on how technology will affect consumer health and healthcare.
Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, CEO of the Federation of State Medical Boards, will talk about the recent increase in state and federal telemedicine investigations. He will review best practices for avoiding investigations, while highlighting successful reimbursement and funding models.
Panelists from the U.S. Justice Department and HHS' Office of Inspector General will discuss problems in vendor relationships.
Another scheduled keynote speaker, Navigant Healthcare Managing Director Paul Keckley, will discuss the state of healthcare reform and its impact.
Matthew Penn, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Law program, will talk about legal issues related to providing care during disasters and pandemics.
The three-day conference follows a string of high-profile data breaches, including 80 million patient records at Anthem and 11 million Premera Blue Cross customer records, as well as growing physician concerns about telemedicine.
