Dr. Michael Murphy has been tapped to serve as chief medical officer of PeaceHealth, a Vancouver, Wash.-based Catholic health system.
Murphy, 60, an obstetrician-gynecologist, will be PeaceHealth's first system-level CMO. He will begin his new job on June 15, working closely with PeaceHealth Chief Nursing Officer Victoria King to oversee clinical care, quality, safety and patient experience, according to the system.
Before joining PeaceHealth, Murphy worked at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in San Diego, where he served as the hospital's first CMO. There, he worked to improve physician communication and implemented a Lean Six Sigma project to decrease insurance denials.
Murphy, who also holds a law degree, has previously worked as VP of medical affairs for Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Ore., as well as for City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. He has also worked in private practice in Salem, Ore., and Washington, D.C., after serving in staff physician roles at the U.S. Navy and Planned Parenthood earlier in his career.
