León to lead AHA's Institute for Diversity in Health Management

The American Hospital Association has tapped Manuel Tomás León to lead its Institute for Diversity in Health Management.

León, 47, will begin his role as president and CEO on May 26. He replaces Fred Hobby, who is retiring after leading the organization for the past 10 years.

The institute works with healthcare organizations and educators to expand leadership opportunities for ethnic minorities in health services management.

Before joining the AHA, León was president and CEO of the People of Color Network, a community-based accountable care network that serves about 6,000 patients in the greater Phoenix area. He also held leadership positions at the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona and Friendship Community Mental Health Center in Phoenix.

Stephen Martin Jr. has been named CEO of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, which accredits more than 6,000 ambulatory health facilities. He will replace retiring CEO John Burke on June 15.

Most recently, Martin, 43, was executive director of the Association for Community Health Improvement at the American Hospital Association. He also worked as chief program officer for the AHA's Health Research & Educational Trust. Previously, he served as health commissioner and COO for the Cook County Department of Health in Chicago and as a senior executive with the Cook County Health & Hospitals System.

Tenet Healthcare Corp. has promoted Tim Adams to senior VP of operations and integration for the Dallas-based hospital chain, and named Eric Evans as CEO of its newly created Texas Region.

Adams, 47, has been with Tenet since May 2012, most recently serving as CEO of the company's Central Region, which includes 15 hospitals and more than 50 outpatient facilities. In his new role, he is responsible for integrating newly acquired companies and joint ventures.

Evans, 38, had been CEO of Tenet's Sierra Providence Health Network in El Paso, Texas, since 2012. He now oversees 23 hospitals and more than 80 outpatient facilities in Tenet's Texas Region.

Dr. John Morley has been named chief medical officer of Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital, both part of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp.

Morley, 60, will oversee medical staff and medical affairs for the two Bronx hospitals. He began his role in March.

The HHC is responsible for managing New York City's 11 public hospitals and five nursing facilities, in addition to other healthcare services.

Morley, an anesthesiologist, previously served as medical director of the state health department's Health Systems Management Division.

Tom De Weerdt has been named executive VP and CFO of Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates, an operator of ambulatory surgery centers and surgical hospitals.

De Weerdt, 42, currently serves as VP and corporate controller of Mead Johnson Nutrition, a Glenview, Ill.-based maker of pediatric nutritional products. He will replace Pete Clemens on May 19. Clemens, whose retirement was announced this year, will continue to work at SCA as a senior adviser.
