Dublin-based Medtronic has acquired Dutch diabetes clinic and research center Diabeter in a deal marking the devicemaker's first entry into healthcare management.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Medtronic announced Thursday its plan to make the independent specialty-care operator part of its Diabetes Services and Solutions unit in a move that builds upon its expansion into healthcare solution services.
“The Diabeter acquisition is a milestone for Medtronic and for the Diabetes Group,” said Hooman Hakami, executive vice president and president of the Diabetes Group at Medtronic in a statement. “This acquisition marks Medtronic's first entry into a diabetes integrated-care model approach and signifies that Medtronic Diabetes is more than pumps and sensors—we are a holistic diabetes management company focused on making a real difference in outcomes and cost.”
Diabeter currently manages over 1,500 Type 1 diabetes patients with a team of 36 people at four locations. As part of the deal, Diabeter will retain its autonomy in clinical decisionmaking, which includes brand choice, according to Medtronic.
