Maurice Smith has been promoted to president of Blue and Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.
Smith, 43, previously served as senior VP of treasury, business development and subsidiary management at the Chicago-based Health Care Service Corp., which owns the Blues affiliate. He replaces Karen Atwood, who is now the organization's executive VP of service and technology.
In his past role at Health Care Service Corp., Smith was responsible for coordinating mergers, acquisitions and strategic partnerships, among other roles. He also served as chairman of the board of directors for Dearborn National Life Insurance Co., the company's largest subsidiary.
