Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Alexian Brothers Health System and Hinsdale, Ill.-based Adventist Midwest Health have joined together to create the third-largest health system in Illinois based on the number of hospitals.
The organizations said they had received all of the necessary legal and regulatory approvals. They announced negotiations last June and reached a definitive agreement in October. Leaders have not yet settled on a name.
The joint operating company will include the five hospitals of Alexian Brothers, which is a division of St. Louis-based Catholic system Ascension Health, and the four hospitals of Adventist Midwest, which is part of Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System.
The combined system is expected to serve about 3.8 million people in the Chicago suburbs. The two not-for-profit organizations will maintain separate ownership of their assets, as well as their differing religious affiliations.
