Who: Peter Bernard, 61
Retiring as: CEO of Bon Secours Health System Virginia, which he led for 15 years. He will step down at the end of the year.
Previous roles: Before heading Bon Secours Virginia, Bernard served in executive positions at a number of faith-based healthcare organizations, including McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, Ky., and Louisville-based Caritas Health Services. He became CEO of Bon Secours Richmond in 2000 and CEO of Bon Secours Virginia in 2008, when the company's Richmond and Hampton Roads systems merged.
Looking back: “I think we established a strong executive leadership team. We drove employee engagement to world-class status, per Gallup, along with high engagement scores with our medical staff and strong outcomes.”
Transitioning to population health: “Everybody seems to be struggling with cutting out excess costs and moving the transformation of the delivery model from volume to value.”
On leading faith-based systems: “I believe they're driven by the core value systems of compassionate patient care with a high emphasis on nursing.” Giving back to their communities is also a critical part of the faith-based mission, he said.
