Dr. Sachin Jain has been appointed chief medical officer at Cerritos, Calif.-based CareMore Health System, an Anthem subsidiary that offers Medicare Advantage plans and operates about 50 care facilities in Arizona, California, Nevada, Tennessee and Virginia.
Jain, 34, comes to CareMore from Merck & Co., the Kenilworth, N.J.-based drugmaker, where he was chief medical information and innovation officer. Jain also was a practicing physician at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System and a lecturer on health policy at Harvard Medical School. He co-founded “Healthcare: The Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation.”
He also has experience in the public sector. Jain served as special assistant to Dr. David Blumenthal, a former national coordinator for health information technology, as well as a senior adviser to former CMS Administrator Dr. Donald Berwick, who he helped launch the CMS Innovation Center.
Jain said in an interview that he hopes to expand CareMore's model of care into more areas once he assumes the new role next week. As a physician with an interest in studying delivery of care, Jain said he jumped at the chance to join the company.
“This is an organization that cares about high-level and low-level details,” he said. “When you get close to it, you realize that innovation is really in its bones.”
CareMore was acquired by WellPoint, now known as Anthem, in 2011.
