Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica has completed its acquisition of Mercy Memorial Hospital System, a not-for-profit single-hospital system in Monroe, Mich.
Mercy Memorial's 238-bed acute-care hospital has been renamed ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. The two organizations solidified the deal in a definitive agreement in July 2014.
A local board of trustees will continue to oversee the hospital's operations, though it will have redefined governance authority, according to a news release. Medical staff will retain their governance structure and bylaws.
ProMedica, which operates 12 hospitals in northwest Ohio and southwest Michigan, expects to complete the integration process within the next three years. ProMedica plans to expand cardiology, cancer and inpatient-care services in the Monroe area, as well as establish an accredited stroke program and higher-level trauma and emergency services.
Last week the Ohio system asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review the appeals court decision against its acquisition of St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Federal Trade Commission, ordering ProMedica to divest the hospital. The three-judge panel said the deal would limit competition and was likely to lead to higher prices for health plans and consumers.
