Verona, Wis.-based Epic Systems' electronic health-record systems, in use at thousands of clinics and hospitals across the country, store the records of more than half of all Americans, according to some estimates. Some within the healthcare community criticize Epic for not doing more to allow its customers to share clinical data with non-Epic facilities. But the challenge of sharing clinical data among different EHR systems is a spiny one, and it's larger than just one vendor.
