Who: Dr. Janis Orlowski, 57
New role: Chief healthcare officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges. Orlowski has been serving as interim CHO since June after Dr. Joanne Conroy left the position to become CEO of Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington, Mass. As chief healthcare officer, she will focus on the interface of healthcare delivery and academic programs.
Priorities in her new job: “What I see as the main focus over the next couple of years is clinical transformation. Healthcare is changing—we're seeing an emphasis more on total population health, we're seeing other changes in healthcare with an emphasis on ambulatory care.”
Outspoken on gun violence: Orlowski was chief medical officer and COO at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington when the hospital received victims from a deadly shooting at the Washington Navy Yard in September 2013. A lone gunman killed 12 people and then himself. During a televised news conference, Orlowski made a plea to end gun violence that quickly went viral: “I would like you to put my trauma center out of business,” she said. “I would like to not be an expert on gunshots.”
