NorthShore University HealthSystem more than doubled its operating surplus in the fourth quarter, compared with the same period last year.
The Evanston, Ill.-based system realized a $34.5 million operating surplus on nearly $480.3 million in revenue in the fourth quarter, which ended Sept. 30. That's a 123% increase from the roughly $15.5 million operating surplus on $448.1 million in revenue it reported in the fourth quarter of 2013.
NorthShore's operating margin jumped to 7.2% from 3.4% in the fourth quarter last year.
While other systems' investments are booming thanks mainly to the strong stock market performance for most of this year, NorthShore reported a $29.7 million nonoperating loss, largely from unrealized losses on investments.
Total unrestricted revenues at NorthShore increased only 7% year over year to $480.3 million, compared with 448.1 million in the first quarter of 2013.
