Dr. Harvey Fineberg has been named president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, a not-for-profit based in Palo Alto, Calif., that offers grants for projects to improve patient care. His appointment is effective in January.
Fineberg, 69, will replace Paul Gray, who will remain as vice chairman of the foundation's board of trustees.
Most recently, Fineberg completed two terms as president of the Institute of Medicine, from 2002 to this year. He holds the presidential chair as a visiting professor at the University of California at San Francisco and served as provost of Harvard University from 1997 to 2001. Before that, he was dean of the Harvard School of Public Health for 13 years.
He's also a founder and past president of the Society for Medical Decision Making and has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization.
