Dr. Michael Williams has been named the first chief medical information officer at the University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, effective immediately.
Williams, 37, a pediatrician, will be tasked with managing UVA Health System's health information technology systems and serve as a liaison between IT staff and clinical staff. UVA Health System, an academic medical center with more than $1.2 billion in annual revenue, operates an Epic Systems Corp. electronic health record.
“We have an amazing array of clinical applications at our disposal to better monitor, track and share clinical data among healthcare providers at UVA,” Williams said in a release. “The challenge I hope to assist with is how we can best apply these to patient care in a way that clearly improves patient care.”
Williams previously served as a regional CMIO for North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, Great Neck, N.Y., since March 2012. He also was the first CMIO at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, the flagship facility of Navicent Health in Macon, Ga.
