The American Medical Association and several other large healthcare organizations are lobbing more complaints at HHS over its incentive program for electronic health records.
The AMA outlined extensive criticism and requested significant changes to the program for the third stage of its meaningful-use requirements. The letter (PDF) was sent Tuesday to the CMS and Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.
The AMA's lengthy letter is accompanied by a shorter letter (PDF), sent Wednesday to HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell, co-signed by several other trade groups, including the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Medical Group Management Association. That letter argues that the lengthy timeline required to test usable EHRs may require the delay of the third stage of meaningful use.
Among the many complaints in the letters are the cost of implementing EHRs and a lack of flexibility in meaningful-use requirements for various types of doctors and providers.
AMA does applaud the planned building of a Health IT Safety Center but complains about the lack of a timeline for the center.
