UW Hospital and Clinics names Gaillard COO, and other news makers

Timothy Gaillard has been named senior VP and COO at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, Madison.

Gaillard, 50, succeeds Ronald Sliwinski, who was named CEO of the system in September. In his new roles, Gaillard will oversee several service lines at the medical center, including pharmacy, transplant and oncology, among others.

Gaillard joined UW Health in July 2010. Most recently he was VP for professional services. Before coming to UW, he was associate director and chief administrative officer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, for five years.

Karen Westervelt has been named senior VP and COO at New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System.

Westervelt, 54, was most recently president and CEO of the William F. Ryan Community Health Network in New York. She also oversaw New York's implementation of federal and state healthcare reform as deputy commissioner of the Office of Primary Care and Health Systems Management in the state's Department of Health, and served as executive director at the Ryan/Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center from 2004 to 2011.

Westervelt replaces Wayne Osten, who is retiring.

St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare has named Richard Liekweg, group president and president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, as the system's executive VP, a new position. Robert Cannon, another BJC group president, has been named his successor. Cannon begins his new role in December and Liekweg's begins his new duties in January.

In his new role, Liekweg, 53, will have direct responsibility for healthcare delivery and supporting services, reporting to BJC CEO Steven Lipstein. Liekweg joined BJC in 2009, serving in his current roles. Previously, he was CEO at UC San Diego Medical Center and held numerous roles at Duke University Health System, Durham, N.C.

Cannon, 53, has been responsible for strategic planning, clinical asset management and supply-chain operations. Before joining BJC in 2000, he was assistant dean of the University of Chicago's Division of Biological Sciences and Pritzker School of Medicine. Cannon will continue to oversee a 10-year plan to renovate BJC's Kingshighway medical center campus. The project includes the expansion and renovation of both Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Garry Faja, CEO of the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based St. Joseph Mercy Health System, will retire at the end of the year.

For much of his three-decade career, Faja, 67, was president and CEO of flagship hospital, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor. He oversaw the formation of the Together Health Network, which connects hundreds of physician's offices and outpatient centers with two dozen hospitals owned by Ascension Health and CHE Trinity Health, St. Joseph Mercy's parent company.

Faja is also a former chairman of the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.

Suzy Miller has been named executive director of Donate Life Texas, the Dallas-based not-for-profit organization that oversees the state's organ donor registry.

Miller, 43, has a background in the organ and blood procurement industries, having worked as public relations director for the Southwest Transplant Alliance based in Dallas and serving in leadership positions at Carter BloodCare, a Texas blood bank.

Miller replaces Pam Silvestri.
