Social media giant Facebook had nothing to say Friday about a Reuters report announcing that it plans to move into healthcare, joining a host of its fellow technology titans. “We don't comment on rumors and speculation,” said a spokeswoman for the Menlo Park, Calif.-based online company.
Reuters reported that Facebook is in the early stages of considering the development of online support communities that would connect patients with peers who have similar health conditions.
The project would compete with patient-centered social networks, such as PatientsLikeMe.
If it moves forward, Facebook would become the latest of many big-tech firms moving into healthcare. Google, Apple, and Samsung all have products on the market, while Amazon met with the Food and Drug Administration this summer for what is believed to be discussions about its potential involvement in healthcare.
