The CMS' publication Tuesday of industry payments to healthcare providers included financial support for clinical research at teaching hospitals.
Data from the Open Payments site show that at least a dozen U.S. teaching hospitals each received millions of dollars in industry funding for research purposes.
The data were published on the Open Payments website, which was required by the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care. The CMS describes research payments as direct payments that fund the coordination and implementation of research studies, such as clinical trials for new drugs or medical devices.
