Whalen named president of Fletcher Allen

Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, Vt., has named Eileen Whalen president and COO, effective in January.

Whalen, 59, will join Fletcher Allen from Harborview Medical Center, an academic medical center in Seattle that is part of University of Washington Medicine. She served as Harborview's executive director. Whalen, a nurse by background, has more than 35 years of healthcare experience.

“Eileen brings considerable experience both as a nurse and senior healthcare administrator to Fletcher Allen,” Fletcher Allen CEO Dr. John Brumsted said in a news release.

Brumsted had been serving as president and CEO of Fletcher Allen Health Care, Vermont's only academic medical center, and Fletcher Allen Partners, the parent multihospital network. He will now serve only as CEO of Fletcher Allen Partners, as Whalen will run the day-to-day operations of Fletcher Allen Health Care.

In Fletcher Allen Partners' fiscal 2013, ended Sept. 30, Fletcher Allen Health Care recorded more than $1 billion in revenue—more than two-thirds of the health system's total.
