Partners HealthCare has forged a deal with Sunquest Information Systems, a diagnostic and laboratory software company, to develop tools that will make it easier for geneticists and pathologists to interpret and share genomic information.
As part of the deal, Sunquest Information Systems will make an investment in GeneInsight, an IT company that is majority-owned by Partners HealthCare.
While the cost of DNA sequencing has dropped, the challenge is in interpreting the results, and determining how to incorporate them into medical practice. Partners and Sunquest hope to create technology that can help researchers and clinicians better understand the significance of the findings, interpret them in real time and share them across institutions.
Boston-based Partners and Sunquest also are halfway through a 10-year partnership to develop information technology around laboratory and anatomic pathology results.
Sunquest, based in Tucson, Ariz., is a subsidiary of Roper Industries.
