Palm, 41, who has been HHS’ chief of staff since 2013, will keep that role in addition to serving as a senior counselor. As a senior counselor, she’ll work on “key strategic initiatives” within HHS. An HHS spokeswoman did not elaborate further.
“Andrea has been an important asset to me, HHS and this administration, and will remain a key part of my management team,” Burwell said in a release. “We’re continuing to build a strong team, and that includes retaining top talent.”
Palm has been with HHS since President Barack Obama entered the office. She has worked on the implementation of the healthcare reform law and public health issues, such as compounding pharmacies and the H1N1 pandemic.
Before HHS, Palm worked for then Sen. Hillary Clinton as a health policy adviser.
