White House tech officer Todd Park leaving post

Who: Todd Park, 41

Previous position: Park has been the White House chief technology officer since March 2012. In that role, he was credited with helping save HealthCare.gov after its rocky rollout. Before moving to his White House position, he had been HHS' CTO since 2009.

New roles: Park will be moving to California to help the federal government recruit technology talent, which some experts see as a critical void. They argue the feds don't have enough highly skilled technology staff to support key governmental functions.

His startups: Before entering government, Park was a successful serial entrepreneur, having co-founded two health information technology companies: Athenahealth, a firm that offers cloud-based electronic-health records and other tech services; and Castlight Health, which offers a price transparency tool that allows patients to compare prices for healthcare services. Park is no longer directly involved with either company.

In his place: Last week, the White House named former Google executive Megan Smith as its new CTO. Smith was involved in a variety of executive roles with Google, but most recently with its Google[x] project, which focuses on research and development for long-term technology bets.
