Citation: Nueva Expansión Hospital Observatorio

Nueva Expansión Hospital Observatorio is an extension of the 200-bed American British Cowdray Hospital and ABC Cancer Center on the organization's Observatorio campus in Mexico City.

The project's inpatient tower replaces rooms built in the 1970s and is connected to the hospital and cancer center via pedestrian bridges. It also houses radiotherapy facilities, the patient registration area and two levels of below-ground parking.

Judges gave the project a Citation in Modern Healthcare's Design Awards.

A garden was created to link the three buildings and to re-establish a campus feel to the institution, something that had been lost with the building of a series of additions since the Observatorio facility first opened in 1964. The project is credited with breathing life into its neighborhood and prompting area homeowners and investors to spruce up their properties.

Awards judge Nicholas Tejeda said the design “stood out” with a distinctive shape much different from typical hospital or medical office building campuses.
