lf you figured a French hospital would be the natural place for a wine bar, you'd be right.
Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital, about 260 miles south of Paris, plans to open a wine bar this month for terminally ill patients in its palliative-care center. Family and friends can also join patients for a glass in what many are calling a first-of-its-kind bar. It's only fitting for a Gallic hospital, since France is one of the world's largest wine producers.
Virginie Guastella, head of the hospital's palliative-care center, told Agence France-Presse the bar's ultimate goal is to cheer up patients who are struggling with a life-threatening disease, and also to help families share in a jovial event in an otherwise sterile setting. “It's a little detail, but it can make all the difference,” she said.
Not a fan of chardonnay or cabernet sauvignon? No worries. Wine won't be the only option for patients and family members. Beer, Champagne and whiskey will also be available.
