For hospitals and physicians, looking beyond patients' acute-care needs is more important than ever in a changing environment focused on population health. They need to help patients manage chronic illnesses and emphasize lifestyle modifications such as weight control and smoking cessation to reduce health risks as people age. ProMedica has taken it one step further and is working within its community to address the root causes of many illnesses, such as poor nutrition and socio-economic status.
Under the leadership of CEO Randy Oostra, the not-for-profit healthcare system with 12 hospitals and about 1,800 physicians has made a concerted effort to fight hunger and food insecurity through its Come to the Table initiative. ProMedica collaborates with community partners, including government and business leaders, to help alleviate hunger in the system's 27-county service area in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.
