NY-Presbyterian eyes new target as NYC hospital wars continue

New York-Presbyterian Hospital is pursuing a partnership with Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., yet another move in the chess game involving New York City's giant healthcare providers.

Victoria Hochman, a spokeswoman for Hudson Valley Hospital Center, confirmed the 128-bed hospital's board of directors voted unanimously to pursue an affiliation with New York-Presbyterian. No timeline was given on when a deal would be completed.

“This new relationship would improve the already high level of healthcare practiced at our hospital and provide HVHC with the resources, leading-edge technology and medical expertise to continue serving the community for many years to come,” the hospital's statement read.

New York City's largest hospitals and health systems have increasingly branched out to the surrounding communities. Most recently, New York-Presbyterian in July added Lawrence Hospital Center, a 187-bed hospital in Bronxville, N.Y., to its network. North Shore-LIJ Health System, based in Great Neck, N.Y., and a dominant presence on Long Island, is in the process of buying two community hospitals north of the city's boroughs. Mount Sinai Health System is looking to expand its population health network to a large multispecialty physician practice in Middletown, N.Y.

Montefiore Health System, headquartered in the Bronx, has aggressively added several hospitals to its ranks. And one of its current targets is an affiliate of New York-Presbyterian's system: Nyack (N.Y.) Hospital, a 375-bed facility.

New York-Presbyterian saw its operating margin slip in the first half of this year, as higher expenses chipped away at revenue gains.
