Dan Drawbaugh, CIO at Pittsburgh-based health giant UPMC, has stepped down from his position.
The system said Drawbaugh, 55, resigned “to pursue other professional interests.” UPMC spokeswoman Wendy Zellner did not elaborate further.
Drawbaugh has been with UPMC since 1983, starting as the director of biomedical engineering for UPMC Shadyside, one of the system's primary hospitals. He was later named CIO of the hospital and then became system CIO in 1996.
UPMC has been at the forefront of several healthcare technology innovations. In 2009, its children's hospital became the first children's hospital to receive a Stage 7 award from HIMSS Analytics, meaning the facility was essentially paperless for patient records. UPMC, which uses a Cerner Corp. inpatient electronic health-record system and an Epic Systems Corp. outpatient EHR, has about 1,800 IT employees.
Ed McCallister, UPMC's senior VP of enterprise applications, will serve as interim CIO until a permanent replacement is named.
