Mayo Clinic Florida names new CEO

Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, 50, will take over as CEO of Mayo Clinic's Jacksonville, Fla., campus on Jan. 1, 2015.

Farrugia, a gastroenterologist, has been with Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic for 26 years. He serves as a professor of medicine, physiology and biomedical engineering, and he also directs the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine.

Farrugia will replace the retiring Dr. William Rupp, 68, who has led Mayo Clinic Florida since 2008 and was CEO of Mayo's hospital in Mankato, Minn., beforehand.

“Dr. Farrugia is a tremendously talented, proven and energetic leader,” Rupp said in a news release. “His overall vision for the Florida campus and his creative ideas for seeking new ways to improve the way we deliver high-quality healthcare to our patients will make for a very bright future for our campus and Mayo Clinic.”

The 214-bed Mayo Clinic Florida opened in 2008. Mayo Clinic has 23 hospitals across its system, which spans five states.
