Geisinger CEO Glenn Steele retiring in 2015

Who: Dr. Glenn Steele Jr., 70

Retiring from: Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa., where he has been CEO since March 2001. While Geisinger recruits a new CEO, Steele will stay on in his current role through the end of the health system's fiscal year in June 2015.

Will continue serving as: Chairman of xG Health Solutions, an independently operated venture Geisinger launched last year to help healthcare organizations create value and improve quality, leveraging Geisinger intellectual property and expertise on issues such as population-health data analytics, care management and health IT.

Previous positions: Served at the University of Chicago as a professor in the department of surgery, VP for medical affairs and dean of the division of biological sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine.

Year after year: Steele has been named to Modern Healthcare's list of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives five times, including the past four years, and to the list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare for the past five years.

Also recognized for: Investigations into the treatment of primary and metastatic liver cancer, colorectal cancer surgery, the cell biology of gastrointestinal cancer and pre-cancer. Steele has authored or co-authored nearly 500 scientific and professional articles.
