Texas Health Resources COO Berdan to succeed Hawthorne as CEO

Texas Health Resources has promoted an executive from within the organization to succeed retiring longtime leader Douglas Hawthorne.

Barclay Berdan, who joined Harris Methodist Health System in 1986 as a vice president and administrator of Harris Methodist Southwest, will assume the role on Sept. 1, the system announced. Harris Methodist joined Presbyterian Healthcare Resources to form Texas Health Resources in 1997. Hawthorne, who announced in January he would leave at the end of the year, has been THR’s CEO since its inception.

The system credits Berdan with building the organization into a North Texas market leader as president of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth and then in several system-level leadership roles before becoming chief operating officer in 2012.

“He brings a well-rounded perspective and unique leadership strengths to the CEO position,” board Chair Anne Bass said in a news release. “At the same time, he represents stability and continuity that will be critical to advancing our strategy as we confront the challenges of a rapidly changing healthcare environment.
