A Virginia law took effect this month prohibiting doctors from charging extra to profit from an outside pathologist's work interpreting a biopsy or Pap test. Previously, a physician could bill a patient and private insurance the full price for a lab service the physician received at a discount—or mark up the service—pocketing the difference.
