Dr. Harold Paz, CEO of Penn State Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center, will step down and become chief medical officer of health insurer Aetna, effective July 28.
Paz, 59, has led the $1.6 billion academic medical center and served as dean of the Penn State College of Medicine since April 2006. He also helped Penn State Hershey complete a merger in June with PinnacleHealth, Harrisburg, Pa. Paz would have served as CEO of the new health system.
“It has been my privilege to serve Penn State over these past eight years and be entrusted with advancing our missions of education, research, patient care and community service,” Paz said in a statement.
Penn State President Eric Barron named Dr. A. Craig Hillemeier, a pediatric gastroenterologist and director of Penn State Hershey Medical Group, interim CEO.
Paz will replace Dr. Lonny Reisman, who left Aetna in April to pursue “new endeavors within the medical and health information technology communities,” according to an Aetna spokeswoman.
