Who: Dr. John Shannon, 54, new CEO of Cook County (Ill.) Health & Hospitals System
Previous roles: Chief of clinical integration at Cook County since February 2013 and interim CEO since March 4. Also was chief medical officer and executive VP at Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas, 2007-12. Parkland nearly lost its Medicare and Medicaid eligibility during his tenure because of quality and financial issues. “There's not a day that I'm at work that I'm not thinking of the experience I had at Parkland. I think what happened with CMS and state regulators ... is something that could happen at any number of institutions across the country. It's given me a special experience and special sensitivity for the awareness that you have to bring to your leadership role.”
