The U.S. economy, meanwhile, added 288,000 jobs last month and unemployment dropped to 6.1%, its lowest level since September 2008, the BLS reported. Overall U.S. employment has increased by more than 200,000 jobs per month for five consecutive months, the first time that's happened since the late 1990s.
June figures are preliminary and seasonally adjusted.
Ambulatory care, nursing home and residential care facilities each saw 0.2% monthly increases in employment levels. Ambulatory care saw solid employment growth, adding 31,000 jobs in June and 181,700 jobs for the year that ended last month, or growth of 2.8%. Ambulatory care employment totaled 6.7 million jobs last month.
Included in that tally were 4,000 jobs added by physicians' offices, also a gain of 0.2% in June. For the year that ended last month, physician-office payrolls added 55,500 jobs, a gain of 2.3%. Physician-offices' hiring totaled 2.5 million as of June.
Nursing homes and residential care facilities added 5,700 jobs last month and 33,900 jobs during the year that ended in June, showing growth of 1.1% for the year. Employment in nursing homes and other facilities totaled 3.3 million jobs in June.
Hospital employment was largely unchanged from the prior month, adding 2,200 jobs in June. Hospitals hired 9,500 employees during the year that ended last month, a marginal increase of 0.2%. Hospitals employed 4.8 million workers as of June.
