Geisinger Health System is one step closer to expanding its reach beyond its native Pennsylvania.
The Danville, Pa.-based provider has signed a definitive agreement to absorb Atlantic City, N.J.-based AtlantiCare.
AtlantiCare, a system consisting of a multi-campus teaching hospital, signed a letter of intent with Geisinger in November. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Wendy Wilson, a spokeswoman for Geisinger, said at the time that the deal was neither an acquisition nor a merger, but called it an “integration” that is part of Geisinger's “growth strategy.”
Geisinger has aggressively expanded its operations in Pennsylvania in recent years, acquiring Lewistown Hospital, Community Medical Center and Bloomsburg Health System. The system also has a pending affiliation deal with Holy Spirit Health System in Camp Hill, Pa.
