Politico reported Thursday that a “major shakeup” is forthcoming at the federal agency.
ONC spokesman Peter Ashkenaz said that he has “no knowledge” of anyone leaving the department. But he pointed out that Dr. Karen DeSalvo, the national coordinator for health information technology, has publicly discussed a need to make changes to the agency's activities as information technology becomes more integral to efforts to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce costs.
“To accomplish those goals we're looking to what can be done to better align the agency for the future,” Ashkenaz said. “As far as any details, it's premature.”
The ONC, which is part of HHS, was created through executive order in 2004. Legislation establishing the agency was enacted in 2009.
