How the 50 Most Influential Physician Execs were chosen

To determine the 10th annual ranking of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders, Modern Healthcare began accepting nominations on Nov. 4, 2013. Through Dec. 20, readers submitted more than 2,600 nominations via ModernHealthcare.com.

The final ballot of 100 names, based on those receiving the most nominations, was then posted online. From Jan. 6 to Feb. 14, readers could submit their votes for the candidates they believed should make the final ranking of the 50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders. A total of 126,200 ballots were cast, more than double in the previous year.

As in past years, readers' votes counted for 50% of the outcome. The other 50% is based on the expert opinions of senior editors at Modern Healthcare. One of the names on this year's final ranking, Dr. Victor Dzau, incoming president of the Institute of Medicine, was not on the ballot. His appointment to the influential position occurred after the nomination and voting windows closed.
