Concordia named UCHealth president and CEO

University of Colorado Health has named Pittsburgh healthcare executive Elizabeth Concordia president and CEO.

Concordia, an executive vice president with UPMC and president of the Pittsburgh health system's hospital and community-services division, will join the Aurora, Colo.-based UCHealth in September. She succeeds former President Rulon Stacey and former CEO Bruce Schroffel, who stepped down last year. Stacey moved to Fairview Health Services, a six-hospital Minneapolis system, last November as its president and CEO. Schroffel retired at the end of his tenure at UC Health. The system announced plans to combine the positions when the two stepped down.

Dr. Bill Neff, who has served as UCHealth's interim chief executive since Stacey's departure, will resume his role as chief medical officer after Concordia's arrival, the system said in a news release.

Concordia will be the second chief executive to head UCHealth, a joint venture created in July 2012 between the University of Colorado Hospital Authority and Poudre Valley Health System. The system finished its first year on June 30, 2013, with operating income of $270.4 million on operating revenue of $2.2 million. UPMC closed its books on June 30, 2013, with operating income of $351 million on operating revenue of $9.6 billion. UPMC's hospital division includes 20 hospitals, and UCHealth officials cited Concordia's experience overseeing operations of that scale as an asset to her new role.

“She has a track record of integrating large groups of physicians and their staffs across a complex health care system with a focus on quality and safety, and I am very confident in our future with such talented leadership,” said Dr. Rich Schulick, the University of Colorado surgery chairman, in the release.
