Lincoln Medical Center, Bronx, N.Y., has completed a $24-million expansion and renovation of its emergency department.
The updated department now has a dedicated children's emergency unit, an adult waiting room, a new psychiatric and mental health emergency unit, a trauma center, an asthma patients' unit and a women's health unit. The new facility is 58,000 square feet and includes 106 treatment bays, twice as many as its previous space.
Work took place in three phases while the Bronx medical center continued to operate. “Closing down even part of the existing ED was out of the question,” Keith Ward, project manager for general contractor Stalco Construction, said in a release.
Lincoln Medical Center's emergency-care facility and Level 1 trauma center is the fifth-busiest in the country and the busiest in New York, according to hospital officials. Last year, its ED tallied nearly 178,000 patient visits.
