Ken Burns, the PBS documentarian best known for his histories of the Civil War, baseball and jazz, next turns his attention to the history and future of cancer care in America.
He will collaborate with Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, whose book, The Emperor of all Maladies, won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction.
Mukherjee made the surprise announcement in Washington during this week's meeting of the Community Oncology Alliance, which represents cancer-care physician practices across the nation.
Due out in 2015, the Burns documentary will “put cancer on the map of the American imagination in a way that hasn't happened in the past,” Mukherjee told the group. It will be “a kind of manifesto for the future of cancer in America.”
