That year, he was named president and CIO of the SSM Information Center, now Integrated Health Technologies, the centralized IT services arm of the organization. He was promoted to system VP and CIO in 2004 and senior VP and CIO in 2009. Just a year before that, Langston oversaw the first “go-live” of what would become—including previous planning, vendor selection and training—a decadelong project to install a comprehensive EHR system in hospitals across the entire SSM organization.
SSM owns hospitals in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, and operates more than 60 outpatient-care sites. Last year, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society recognized two SSM hospitals as having achieved Stage 7, the highest rating on its health information technology adoption model. All other SSM hospitals are at HIMSS Stage 6, the system reports.
“I would like to personally thank Tom for his contributions and service of more than 30 years at SSM,” said SSM President and CEO Bill Thompson, in a news release. “His leadership and insight have helped us implement many of the innovations that place SSM in a unique position to thrive in the changing world of healthcare.”
Langston plans to step down July 3. A nationwide search for his replacement is underway.
