Republican legislators are calling for a federal investigation into Maryland's use of federal dollars to build its problem-plagued health insurance exchange.
Reps. Dr. Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) sent a letter (PDF) to HHS' Office of the Inspector General Wednesday calling for an inquiry into how officials in Maryland spent more than $100 million in federal dollars to construct a website that remains dysfunctional more than four months after its launch.
“As a result of the fact that Maryland appears to be willing to continue to waste tens of millions of more dollars, we ask that the investigation start immediately,” the letter states.
Fewer than 30,000 individuals have signed up for commercial plans through Maryland Health Connection. That's just 20% of the enrollment target for the state.
Several other state exchanges—including those for Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon and Vermont—continue to have significant technology problems.
