Studies have shown that patients do better and leave sooner from intensive-care units managed by critical-care doctors. But these doctors are in short supply nationwide, and small community hospitals have a difficult time recruiting and retaining them. Connecting critical-care doctors to small ICUs via telemedicine, proponents say, is the next best thing to hiring them.
