Top executives at Catholic Health Initiatives, one of the largest U.S. health systems, will take on new roles under a corporate reorganization.
Kevin Lofton, 59, will remain CEO of the Englewood, Colo.-based system, a role he has held since 2003, but will step down as its president. Lofton will oversee the system's strategic direction and potential deals.
Two executives will succeed Lofton as president, a move that will position the hospital system “effectively for the dramatic and rapid changes we are experiencing in the healthcare industry,” Lofton said in a news release.
Michael Rowan, 56, executive VP and COO, was named president of health system delivery. Rowan's new role will include oversight of CHI's hospitals across 18 states.
Dean Swindle, 53, executive VP for business services and CFO, has been named president of enterprise business lines. He will oversee development of new ventures, finance, supply chain and its insurance strategies, among other responsibilities.
Rowan will keep his role as COO, and Swindle will continue as CFO.
The reorganization comes as Catholic Health Initiatives has emerged as an active dealmaker in an industry that has lately seen notable and sizable transactions.
The system acquired St. Luke's Episcopal Health System last year for $2 billion and brokered an affiliation with the Baylor College of Medicine and the Texas Heart Institute. Those deals followed 2012 transactions in Nebraska and Kentucky. The system also acquired a stake in a Washington health plan and is negotiating to acquire a 70,000-member commercial health plan.
