For patients at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a musical performance might be just what the doctor ordered thanks to a new collaboration with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.
The agreement gives the medical center the streaming rights to the orchestra's concerts, which patients will be able to access on-demand through the GetWellNetwork, a patient education system that links to their televisions.
Music is “one of the world's oldest medicines” and has had a role in treating conditions ranging from brain injury and stroke to Alzheimer's disease and autism, Dr. Stephen Klasko, Thomas Jefferson's president and CEO, wrote in a blog post.
The collaboration comes as a number of studies have shown that music, and particularly classical music, can have a positive effect on health—boosting spirits, soothing nerves, reducing stress and even easing pain.
