It seems sheriff's deputies in Hidalgo County, Texas, didn't buy the claims of five suspects who said their cockfights were for medical research.
Sheriff Lupe Trevino said a landowner and renter plus several organizers face state jail charges over the illegal cockfights.
Earlier this month, deputies targeted a warehouse near Edinburg where cockfights drew about 100 spectators. The owners allegedly told deputies that the rooster fights were legal and for medical research.
Some observers fled, but deputies nabbed more than 50 people and cited them on misdemeanor charges of being a spectator at a cockfight.
Deputies seized cockfighting equipment, 21 rooster carcasses and took 78 live birds to a shelter.
