Trying to get rid of a pesky wart can be annoying. But now the Food and Drug Administration warns it can also be a combustible experience.
The FDA says it has received 14 reports since 2009 of cryogenic wart removers catching fire during home use. Ten patients suffered “singed hair, blisters, burns or skin redness,” the agency said. Objects nearby also were set on fire.
Cryogenic wart removers contain liquid dimethyl ether and propane, and are used to freeze off warts.
“The labeling for these products clearly states that they are flammable and should be kept away from fire, flame, heat sources and cigarettes,” said FDA nurse consultant Karen Nast.
Three cases involved a candle, but the rest had no flame nearby.
“This is extremely concerning, especially because people may not be aware that everyday household items like curling irons and straight irons can be hot enough to be an ignition source for these products,” Nast said.
