The ACGME's Next Accreditation System went in effect for seven specialties last July, and will be rolled out for 19 others this July 1. The system is designed to evaluate and promote residents based on demonstrated competencies rather than the passage of time. The competencies measured include patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and communication.
It is now Holmboe's job to work with the American Board of Medical Specialties and the medical education community to coordinate the development, implementation and refinement of the new outcomes-based milestone system.
Before joining the ABIM, Holmboe was director of student clinical assessment at the Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn., and associate director of the Yale primary care internal medicine residency program.
“Dr. Holmboe was selected from a slate of outstanding candidates who expressed interest in the Milestones position,” Dr. Thomas Nasca, ACGME CEO, said in a news release. “We are fortunate to have a physician leader with his background and depth of experience join the ACGME team.”
