Hall of Fame inductees named

Modern Healthcare is pleased to announce that Fred L. Brown, John R. Griffith and Yoshi Honkawa have been chosen as the latest inductees for the Health Care Hall of Fame.

Brown's career in healthcare administration spans nearly 50 years, including almost two decades of leadership at hospitals and health systems in the St. Louis area. He helped conceive, develop and advance the concept of integrated healthcare delivery, which he put into practice while serving as the founding CEO of BJC Health Care in St. Louis. Brown, 73, also was active in healthcare organizations regionally and nationally, including stints as chairman of the American Hospital Association and the Joint Commission.

Griffith, 79, spent more than five decades instructing and mentoring future generations of healthcare leaders—as well as longtime healthcare executives—through his faculty leadership positions at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he first started teaching in 1960. His textbooks are considered the gold standard in the industry and are used across the country to teach institutional management. His former students credit him with instilling values that have served them well dealing with the challenges they've encountered in the healthcare C-suite.

Honkawa, 89, also had a 50-year career in healthcare administration and policy development. He held executive positions at several Southern California health systems, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. President Jimmy Carter appointed him to serve and later chair the National Council on Health Planning and Development. In California, then Gov. Ronald Reagan appointed Honkawa as the first chairman of the state's Advisory Health Council. A strong advocate for greater diversity among healthcare leaders, he served as a founding board member of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management.

The three healthcare leaders will be profiled in the March 24 issue of Modern Healthcare and will be honored at a gala on March 23 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, in conjunction with the American College of Healthcare Executives' 2014 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, set for March 24-27.

They will join the 95 healthcare luminaries who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since 1988.
